A felhívás keretében – a Babits Mihály szépirodalmi műfordítói ösztöndíj kiírásához hasonlóan – 40 év alatti fordítók, tudományos szakemberek és kutatók jelentkezését vártuk, bármely tudományterületről.

A rendelkezésre álló keretösszeg 5.100.000 forint volt. A nyertes pályázók fejenként bruttó 300.000 forint díjazásban részesülnek.

A jelentkezések elbírálását a Petőfi Kulturális Ügynökség által felkért szakmai kuratórium végezte. A Dienes Valéria szakfordítói pályázat szakmai kuratóriumának tagjai:

  • Csender Levente (Magyar Művészeti Akadémia)
  • Sohár Anikó (Műfordítók Egyesülete)
  • Kappanyos András (Eötvös Loránd Kutatási Hálózat)
  • Jeney Zoltán (Petőfi Kulturális Ügynökség)
  • a kuratórium elnöke: Pál Dániel Levente (Petőfi Kulturális Ügynökség)

A legfontosabb értékelési szempontok az alábbiak voltak: a fordítási minta nyelvi, stilisztikai és terminológiai minősége, az értelmezés pontossága, a nyelvi koherencia, a nyelvtani korrektség, a szerző és mű aktualitása és érdekessége a magyar tudományos élet és művelődés számára, valamint a műfordító szakmai beágyazottsága. A kuratórium kizárólag szakirodalmi művek fordítását támogatta.

A 2021. július 23-i határidőre beérkezett 21 pályázat általános értékelése után többfordulós, érvekkel egyeztetett módon alakult ki az alábbi, végső sorrend:

  • Hamerli Nikolett / angol / Joseph Addison / A The Spectator folyóiratban megjelent, Milton Paradise Lost epikus költeményét tárgyaló esszék
  • Hudácskó Brigitta Ilona / angol / Lucy Worsley / A Very British Murder: The Curious Story of How Crime Was Turned Into Art
  • Kovács Tímea / angol / Valentí Rull / Quaternary Ecology, Evolution and Biogeography
  • Szabó Csanád / angol / Alessandro Ludovico / Nyomtatott művek a posztdigitális korban. A könyvkiadás változásai 1894 óta
  • Vásári Melinda / angol / Eelco Runia / Megindít a múlt (részlet 1-3. fejezet)

Announcing the winners of the first Valéria Dienes Specialized Translation Grant Competition

The Petőfi Cultural Fund has announced the “Valéria Dienes Specialized Translation Grant Competition.” The Fund welcomes applications from young, talented scholarly and specialized translators to help them launch their careers and to provide support for high-quality scholarly and specialized translation.

The grant competition is open to applicants who are seeking support for the translation of a work which was originally written in another language and has not yet been published in Hungarian. The work in question can be an article in a given field of the sciences, an essay, a monograph or part of a monograph, a non-fiction work, or a complete work in any field of the sciences. As with the Mihály Babits Fiction Translation Grant, the call was open to translators, scholars, and researchers under the age of 40 from any field of study.

The available budget was 5,100,000 HUF. The winning applicants will receive a gross award of 300,000 HUF each.

The applications were evaluated by a professional committee of experts appointed by the Petőfi Cultural Fund. The members of the committee for the Valéria Dienes competition for translators were:

  • Levente Csender (Hungarian Academy of Arts)
  • Anikó Sohár (Hungarian Literary Translators’ Association)
  • András Kappanyos (Eötvös Loránd Research Network)
  • Zoltán Jeney (Petőfi Cultural Agency)
  • Chair of the committee: Dániel Levente Pál (Petőfi Cultural Agency)

The most important criteria on which the evaluations were based included the linguistic, stylistic, and terminological quality of the sample translation, the accuracy of the interpretation, linguistic coherence, grammatical correctness, the relevance of the author and the work for Hungarian academic life and culture, and the professional experience and qualifications of the translator. The committee only provided support for translations of works of scholarly literature.

After the 21 applications which had been received by the deadline (23 July 2021) were evaluated, the following final ranking was established through a process consisting of several rounds, in which specific reasons were offered by the committee members in support of their recommendations:

  • Nikolett Hamerli / English / Joseph Addison / Essays on Milton’s Paradise Lost, originally published in The Spectator
  • Brigitta Ilona Hudácskó / English / Lucy Worsley / A Very British Murder: The Curious Story of How Crime Was Turned Into Art
  • Tímea L. Kovács / English / Valentí Rull / Quaternary Ecology, Evolution and Biogeography
  • Csanád Szabó / English / Alessandro Ludovico / Post-Digital Print: The Mutation of Publishing since 1894
  • Melinda Vásári / English / Eelco Runia / Moved by the Past (excerpt, chapters 1-3)
  • Anna Tóth / French / Jacques Rancière / Les bords de la fiction
  • Kata Veress / Norwegian / Anders Bortne / Sleepless

In the unanimous opinion of the members of the committee, there were not enough applications of sufficient quality to merit the award of all 17 grant opportunities.

As the committee did not offer a number of grants that would have exhausted the available budget, the Petőfi Cultural Fund will soon launch a new call for applications for the remaining funds.
